The Ruruma community in Southern Kaduna, Kaduna State, has pleaded with the government of President Bola Tinubu to establish a military base in the area to ward off the criminal activities of bandits and kidnappers.
This was communicated by the Community’s National President, Mr. Daniel Dallah, in a statement released on Sunday.
According to him, a whooping sum of N1 billion has been paid by the community in ransom payments to bandits and kidnappers.
Dallah also disclosed that 13 people have lost their lives to these terrorists, with 200 abducted as well.
The Community leader lamented that the lack of military presence has left the community open to these attacks.
They, therefore, called on the government of President Bola Tinubu to establish military presence in the community’s local government headquarters in Kwasam to check this menace.
“There has been a continued escalation of insecurity in our communities leading to brutal killing and displacement of people.
“The military formation in Kwasam axis will enable the communities that have been displaced to return to their ancestral land as they have abandoned their farms and farm produce. Currently, our Chief, Alh. Dauda Abdulsalam, the Pogom Kumana, for some years, has not been at home, due to escalating insecurity in the region.
“Bandits have continued to occupy surrounding communities and farmlands unchallenged by security operatives.
“A CBN director was abducted in Kwasam where a colossal sum of N200 million was paid as ransom.
“Also, communities like Fagen rawa, Kaibi, Kusheka, Fadei, Ruruma, Rafin rimi, Kurera, Kitimi, Kakude and Kiwollo are all displaced by these bandits,” the statement read in part.
The community pointed to the dire impact this terrorism is having on agriculture in the area as farmers are being limited.
Dallah noted that the community doesn’t even have a police division and that they and neighbouring communities live in constant fear.
“Bandits have rendered their communities incapacitated.
“The creation of a military base in Kwasam, the headquarters of Ruruma Community will serve the entire Kumana Chiefdom and other neighbouring communities which does not have any military formation, even a police division.
“The absence of this military formation has made the Ruruma and its surrounding communities vulnerable to constant kidnapping, and many valuables carted away unchallenged by the bandits with a promise of coming back,” the statement ended.
The community says it is ready to assist the military and government in any way possible in order to end the spate of kidnappings and banditry in the area.
