Gunmen suspected to be armed bandits ambushed Nigerian Army troops in Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of four soldiers. The sole administrator of Gudu council, Umar Balle, disclosed this during a phone conversation on Sunday.
Balle, who narrowly escaped the ambush himself, reported that in addition to the four soldiers who were killed, seven others sustained gunshot wounds, and their vehicle was set on fire. The injured soldiers were initially treated at Gudu General Hospital before being transferred to Usmanu Danfodiyo Teaching Hospital in Sokoto.
The attack was also confirmed by Yahya Gudu, the member representing Gudu in the state House of Assembly, who stated that two patrol vehicles were burned during the incident. In response to the ambush, more security personnel have been deployed to the area.
Attempts to obtain a statement from the Sokoto State government were unsuccessful, as the special adviser on security matters to the Governor, Col. Ahmed Usman (rtd), was unreachable at the time of reporting.

How long will our soldiers be under the menace of these ragtag iltrained bandits?
The government should be on top of the security situation like other responsible and responsive governments of the world. But alas we are found wanting.
This helplessness on the part of government at various levels begs for urgent restructuring of the country.
The paradox is that the security agencies that are menaced are also the agencies that are designated to man the various entry points through which these bandits and their collaborators bring in their arms and ammunitions.
