Benue State Nigeria: Herdsmen kill 26 within 45 days in Turan-Resident

No fewer than 26 persons were said to have been killed while  18 others are currently receiving treatment in healthcare centers  following attacks by herdsmen in the various communities of Turan in Kwande local government area of Benue state.

The attack, according to a resident of the area, Hon Lawrence Akerigba, happened between January 7th and February 21st.

However the worst attack reportedly took place in the past three days. Hon Akerigba spoke Wednesday in an interview with newsmen in Makurdi and said Iyariwa, Anwase, Abande, Waya, Mbaav and Kpemkar, a mountainous area in Turan, Kwande local government area have all been affected by the attacks from the invading herdsmen.

He said the attackers who usually come from neighbouring state of Taraba through Kashimbilla and Camerounian borders have launched the attacks affecting three council words of the area including, Moon, Mbakyor, Yaav, Kumakwagh and Mbadura.
He said the attackers have sustained attacks in the past three days on Mbaav, Iyariwa and Kpemkar in Mbadura and Mbaikyor council wards resulting  in the killing of at least 14 persons.

“They attacked today and raized down houses at  Kpemkar a mountainous area in Mbakyor council ward in Turan and killed six persons. They also killed five persons at Mbaav Monday and three others were killed Tuesday in Iyarwa.

“The people displace are taking refuge in Jato Aka, which is four kilometres from the communities.

“There is fear that if government do not respond quickly, the attackers will also invade Jato Aka.
“There is military presence at Kashimbilla which is about two kilometres to the attacked communities, but since the it started, no serious action has been taken,” he said.
